Quickly and easily check your aquarium's ammonia levels with API AMMONIA TEST STRIPS. Fish continually release ammonia into the aquarium through their gills, urine and solid waste. Uneaten food and decaying organic matter also add ammonia to the water. Ammonia is toxic to fish and can cause gill damage, stress and death. Regular testing is recommended because ammonia levels can build quickly due to fish waste and uneaten food. Simply dip the test strip into the water, then compare the results with the precise, easy-to-read colour-coded chart to determine if any action should be taken. The chart includes recommendations on how to treat the water and neutralize ammonia. Safe for use in fresh and salt water.

Fill a clean test tube with 5 ml of water to be tested, or to the line on the tube. Add 8 drops from ammonia test solution bottle #1, holding the dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to assure uniform drops. Next, add 8 drops from ammonia test solution bottle #2, holding the bottle the same way as bottle #1. Cap the test tube and shake vigorously for 5 seconds, then wait an additional 5 minutes for color to develop. Read the test results by comparing the color of the solution to the appropriate ammonia color card (either freshwater or saltwater). The tube should be viewed in a well-lit area against the white of the card. The closest match indicates the level of ammonia in the water sample. Rinse the test tube with clean water after use. Do not pour test tube contents back into aquarium or pond.
